Poker is a card game in which players bet against other players based on the value of their hand. The goal is to create the best hand possible. There are hundreds of variations of the game.<\/p>\n
Typically, the game has two or more betting intervals. During each of these, the player with the highest ranking poker combination makes a bet.<\/p>\n
After each round, all of the bets are combined into a central pot. The player with the best hand is the winner.<\/p>\n
To play, players buy chips. They are usually made of plastic or ceramic. White, blue, or red chips are used. If there are more than seven players, a special fund called the kitty is set up. It is used to pay for food and new decks of cards.<\/p>\n
Cards are dealt in rotation, starting with the first player and then each player. The dealer can choose to cut the cards, or shuffle them. Depending on the poker variant, each player may or may not shuffle his or her own cards.<\/p>\n
Players can discard up to three cards. In some games, the ace is treated as the lowest card.<\/p>\n
After the betting interval, the dealer shuffles the cards. One card is face-up in each player’s hand. Each player must bet the same number of chips into the pot.<\/p>\n
After all the players have bet, the dealer reveals his or her hole cards. The earliest form of the game was probably a 17th-century French game named poque. Later, the game was introduced to the U.S. and Canada by American colonists and French settlers.<\/p>\n
